Minimum Headroom Clearance: What the Codes Say

Most building codes, including the International Residential Code (IRC), mandate a minimum headroom clearance of 6 feet 8 inches (80 inches). This measurement is taken vertically from the nosing of the tread (the edge that projects out) to the ceiling above,  ensuring enough space for people of average and even above-average height to ascend and descend comfortably.
