I learned that the shower needs to be at least 30 inches wide and 30 inches deep. There also needs to be a clear space of at least 24 inches in front of the shower door. The minimum distance between the center of the toilet and the side of any object, including a wall, is 15 inches.
The minimum distance between the finished wall and the center line of a drain is 12 inches, but you should check with the toilet manufacturer to verify this measurement. The minimum ceiling height for a bathroom is 7 feet, but there are some exceptions to this rule.
Bonus tips:
If you are purchasing a prefabricated shower unit, the manufacturer has probably already taken care of the minimum measurement requirements. However, it is still a good idea to double-check the measurements.
If you are building your own shower, make sure to leave enough space around the shower for the shower fixtures, valves, head, soap dishes, and safety grab bars.
If you are planning to install a shower seat, make sure that the seat does not intrude into the minimum measurement area when it is closed.
If you are building an odd-shaped shower, make sure that the shower still meets the minimum measurement requirements in all directions.
Keep in mind that building codes can vary from place to place. It is always a good idea to check with your local building department to verify the requirements in your area.
I hope these tips help you with your bathroom remodel!
