Learn How To Design Curved Steps For A Straight Set of Stairs

Greg offers a step-by-step guide on designing curved stairs for a straight set of stairs. The design, although seemingly complex is achievable for anyone with the right instructions.

Initial Steps

Drawing the Base: The first step involves drawing a centerline on a four-foot by twenty-foot rectangle. This rectangle represents the space you have allocated for the stairs.

Choosing the Curve:  Next, a circle is drawn four feet away from the centerline. The size of the circle determines the curvature of the stairs. A wider diameter creates a gentler curve, while a smaller diameter creates a sharper curve. The video uses a circle with a six-foot diameter and a three-foot radius.

Shaping the Tread:  Once the circle is drawn, all but the portion that forms the shape of the tread is erased. This curved section will form the basis of each stair tread.

Adding the Treads

Following Building Codes:  The next step involves drawing parallel lines at specific intervals behind the curved tread section. These lines represent the risers, the vertical parts of the stairs. The distance between these lines should comply with your local building codes.

The video recommends referring to building code books, which typically require a minimum tread depth of ten inches for residential stairs and eleven inches for commercial stairs.

Spacing the Risers:  In the video, the builder uses one-foot increments to space the risers. This ensures comfortable walking on the stairs. Remember to consult your local building authority to confirm that these dimensions are compliant with the regulations in your area.

Repeating the Process:  The tread shape is then extended downwards using the same one-foot increment until the entire staircase is drawn. This repetitive process ensures that all the treads are uniform.

Finalizing the Design

Trimming the Unnecessary Lines: Once the treads and risers are drawn, the center line is erased. This clarifies the design and makes it easier to visualize the actual staircase.

Adding the Finishing Touches: The video concludes by showcasing a finished design with carpeting on the treads and wood for the risers. This demonstrates the visual appeal of curved stairs designed within a straight layout.
