Where You Can Locate Stair Landings And How Many - Residential Stair Design Building Codes

Stair landings play a vital role in both the functionality and safety of a stairway. In residential buildings, the placement and number of landings are flexible, offering homeowners and designers considerable creative freedom.

Landings can be situated anywhere along the stairway, even just one step away from the top or bottom. Alternatively, multiple landings can be incorporated throughout the stairway's length.

Common stairway designs incorporating landings include:

L-shaped stairway: This design features a landing at the turn, where the stairway changes direction. The landing can be placed anywhere within the stairway.

U-shaped stairway or switchback: This configuration typically includes a landing in the middle, where the stairs reverse direction.

Building codes mandate specific dimensions for stairways and landings. In most single-family homes, the minimum width for both the stairway and the landing is 36 inches. Consequently, the minimum landing size in such cases would be 6 feet wide by 3 feet deep. The orientation of the stairs within these dimensions can vary.

However, angled landings present additional complexities and may necessitate adherence to winder building code regulations.
