Why That Fancy Fence Might Be a Flop: The Trouble with Lattice and Trim

Lattice fences are undeniably attractive. They offer a touch of classic charm and can even support climbing plants for a burst of greenery. But before you jump on the lattice bandwagon for your next DIY fence project, there are a few reasons why you might want to reconsider, especially if you're planning to add a U-shaped trim at the bottom.

1. Water Woes: A Recipe for Rot

That stylish U-shaped trim might look great, but it creates a perfect little bathtub for water at the bottom of your fence. Every time it rains or your sprinklers run, water will collect in that channel with nowhere to go. This constant moisture becomes a breeding ground for rot, mold, and mildew, significantly shortening the lifespan of your fence.  Even pressure-treated wood will eventually succumb to the relentless assault of trapped water.

2.  Pest Paradise: An Open Invitation

Damp wood isn't just a problem for rot; it's also a beacon for pests. Termites, carpenter ants, and other wood-loving critters will be drawn to the consistently moist environment created by that U-shaped trim. Before you know it, your beautiful fence could become a buffet for insects, compromising its structural integrity and leading to costly repairs.

3.  Maintenance Mayhem: More Work Than You Bargained For

A lattice fence with a water-trapping trim demands more upkeep than other fence styles. You'll need to be vigilant about cleaning out debris and ensuring proper drainage to prevent water accumulation. This means regular inspections, cleaning, and possibly even applying sealant more frequently to protect the wood. If you're not prepared for the extra maintenance, you might find yourself with a fence that quickly deteriorates.

4.  Durability Dilemmas:  Not Built to Last

Lattice, by its very design, is less robust than a solid fence. The thin, crisscrossed slats are more susceptible to damage from wind, impact, or even just the weight of climbing plants. Adding a U-shaped trim that traps water further weakens the structure by promoting rot and decay. If you're looking for a long-lasting, durable fence, lattice with this type of trim might not be the best choice.

Alternatives to Consider

If you're set on the lattice look, there are ways to mitigate these problems. Opt for a different trim design that allows for water drainage, or consider using a more durable material like vinyl or composite lattice. You could also explore alternative fence styles that offer similar aesthetic appeal without the same drawbacks.

Ultimately, the best fence for you depends on your specific needs and priorities. But by understanding the potential pitfalls of lattice with a U-shaped trim, you can make an informed decision and build a fence that is both beautiful and built to last.
