Easy Carpentry Trick From Old Home Builders - Calculating And Layout For Odd Shaped Curved Arches

In this video, Greg teaches viewers a carpentry trick that can be used to create odd-shaped curved arches. This trick is based on a simple formula that can be used to calculate the center point and distance needed to create the arch. The video also includes a step-by-step demonstration of how to use the trick.

The trick is easy to learn and can be used to create arches of any shape. It is a great way to add a unique touch to your home or project.

Steps to Create an Odd-Shaped Curved Arch

Cut a board with an angle: The first step is to cut a board with an angle from a point on the center line to a point seven and a quarter inches away from the line. The width of the board will determine the height of the arch. A wider board will create a higher arch.

Position the board: Place the angled board so the point where the angle was cut sits on the center point of the arch. The longer side of the board should run along the horizontal line.

Drive nails into the centerpoint or offset slightly:  Nails can be driven into the center point of the board or offset slightly depending on how precise you need the curve to be. Greg positions the nails slightly off center, lining them up with the seven and a quarter inch line.

Extend the shorter side of the board (optional): Then recommends extending the shorter side of the board by about an inch. This can be later cut off or replaced with a small block to create a smoother surface for the guide board to slide on.

Reposition the guide board and draw the arch: Slide the guide board along the nails, keeping it tight against them. Use a pencil to trace the curve along the edge of the board. This will create the arch shape.

Verify Accuracy: He also acknowledges that some viewers might be skeptical about the accuracy of this method. To address this concern, he compares the hand-drawn curve to a mathematically generated arc line. The video shows that the two curves perfectly match, demonstrating the accuracy of this old trick.

Complete the Arch: To complete the arch, simply flip the board over and repeat the steps on the other side. Ensure the guide board remains tight against the nails or blocks while sliding it to maintain a consistent curve.

Additional Tips

If you are unsure about the accuracy of your arch, you can use a compass to draw a perfect arc.

If you need to create a very large arch, you may need to use multiple boards to create the guide board.

Once you have created the arch, you can use it as a template to cut out the actual arch from a piece of wood.

I hope this article helps you to create beautiful and accurate curved arches!
