Learn How To Calculate And Build Framed Wall Above Step Down Type Hillside Concrete Foundation
There are a variety of ways to frame a wall like this, but Greg outlines two methods that are sure to be successful.
The first method involves setting up batter boards. These are temporary structures that help to establish level points for the wall. To do this, you will need two boards and a water level or laser level. Once the batter boards are in place, you can tie a string line to them to create a level line that you can use to measure your wall framing studs.
The second method does not require batter boards. Instead, you can simply establish the height of the wall and then frame the height of the wall. You can then run your string line from the top of this wall to the top of the framing plate.
Here are some key things to keep in mind when using either of these methods:
Make sure that your framing plates are securely anchored to the concrete foundation.
When calculating the height of your framing studs, be sure to subtract the width of the upper framing plates.
You can install a block at the top of the wall framing plate to provide a space for the other wall's top framing plate to lap over.
Make sure that your string line is nice and tight and straight before you start measuring your framing studs.
The option of using treated lumber for the bottom plate of the wall. This is a good option if you are concerned about the wood coming into contact with the concrete foundation.
Bonus Tips
Use straight lumber.
Double-check all of your measurements before you get started.
Consider using trusses instead of string lines to save money.
You can frame your wall with a 16-inch on-center layout.
