Gable roof: If the gable is square to the roof, you can simply measure from the edge.
Plywood method: Use a sheet of plywood as a large framing square. Mark the desired measurement on the plywood and use a string to create a straight line from the mark to the roof. Ensure the fascia board is straight before using this method.
Center point method: Measure the overall distance of the roof and find the center point. From the center point, measure to the desired point on the roof to create a square line.
