Elaborate Roof Framing For Building Two Story House With Wrap Around Porch - Part 6
This video is part 6 of a series on building a house with a wrap around porch. In this video, Greg removes some of the stuff that will make his video turn a little faster and avoid annoying color changes.
He also focuses in on one part of the house where the roof is built pretty much the same as the one in the front. He then removes the fascia board and comes in on the front corner of the porch. He also talks about the rafters, sheathing, and ridge. Finally, he shows how the porch roof is going to die into the upper roof.
Here are some bonus tips from the video:
Use two boards instead of one long board for your ridge.
Install some backing behind the soffit.
Nail the roof sheathing to the bottom of the boards.
Lower the blocks to allow for air circulation.
The ends of the rafters should be square on each side.
Mid-span blocks usually go in the middle of the span of the common rafter.
Be prepared to spend a little bit of time working on the section of the roof that sits on top of the lower section or the porch roof.
The porch is going to be a little bit longer in the back and might require larger rafters.
You might need to install larger hips or double up the hips or add some type of structural supports in the areas where the hips are going to be sitting over some type of load-bearing walls.
The ceiling backing is going to go all the way around the rake wall.
You're going to need to have a gap between the fascia board and the roof sheathing to allow for the roof shingles to slide underneath.
This roof is a two and twelve.
To save money, get rid of the dormer in the front and the two dormers on the side.
