EASIEST Method For Calculating "Skillion Roof Rafters And Walls" Without Complicated Math Formulas

Skillion Roof Rafters: Surprisingly Familiar Territory for DIYers

Think building a skillion roof involves a whole new set of rafter calculations? Think again! If you've ever tackled a gable roof, you'll be surprised how much of that knowledge translates directly to skillion roof construction. Let's break down the similarities and show you how your existing skills can be put to good use.

The Common Ground: Rise, Run, and Rafter Length

At their core, both skillion and gable roofs rely on the same fundamental principles of trigonometry to determine rafter lengths.  Here's a quick refresher:

Rise: The vertical distance from the wall plate to the ridge board (or in a skillion roof, the top wall plate).

Run: The horizontal distance covered by the rafter. In a gable roof, it's half the span. In a skillion roof, it's the entire span.

Rafter Length: The actual length of the rafter, calculated using the Pythagorean theorem (a² + b² = c²) where 'a' is the rise, 'b' is the run, and 'c' is the rafter length.

The Skillion Twist: It's Basically Half a Gable

Imagine a gable roof sliced down the middle. That's essentially what a skillion roof is! This means the run for a skillion rafter is the entire span of the roof, unlike a gable where it's half the span. However, the calculation for the rafter length remains the same.

Layout: Same Tools, Slightly Different Approach

Framing Square: To mark the plumb cut, seat cut, and birdsmouth.

Speed Square: Helpful for quick angle and length measurements.

Tape Measure: Essential for accurate measurements.

Level: To ensure your walls and plates are level.

The main difference in layout lies in the fact that a skillion roof has a single slope. This means:

No Ridge Board: You'll be working with two wall plates at different heights.

Consistent Slope: All rafters will have the same angle and length.

By recognizing the similarities and adapting your existing skills, you can confidently tackle this modern roof style and enjoy the satisfaction of building it yourself.
