Easier Methods To Help You Design And Layout Gambrel Roof - Framing Measurement Calculations

Laying out a gambrel roof can seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be! Here's a simplified method for calculating your rafter lengths, focusing on the essential steps:

1. Gather Your Information

Building Width: Measure the total width of your building.

Roof Pitch: Decide on the desired pitch for both the upper and lower roof sections. Steeper pitches require longer rafters.

Overhang: Determine how much overhang you want beyond the walls.

2.  Calculate the Run

Divide your building width in half. This is the "run" for each side of your roof.

3. Determine the Rise

Lower Rafters: For the lower, steeper rafters, decide how high you want the break point to be (where the lower roof meets the upper). This vertical distance is your "rise."

Upper Rafters: Decide the total height of your roof peak from the wall. Subtract the lower rafter rise to get the upper rafter rise.

4.  Apply the Pythagorean Theorem

This simple formula helps calculate the rafter length (the hypotenuse of a right triangle):

a² + b² = c²

Where 'a' is the run, 'b' is the rise, and 'c' is the rafter length.

Let's illustrate with an example

Building Width: 20 feet
Lower Roof Pitch: 60 degrees (a steep slope)
Upper Roof Pitch: 30 degrees (a more gentle slope)
Total Roof Height: 8 feet
Overhang: 1 foot

Calculations:

Run: 20 feet / 2 = 10 feet
Lower Rafter Rise: Let's say you want a 5-foot rise for the lower rafters.
Upper Rafter Rise: 8 feet (total height) - 5 feet (lower rise) = 3 feet

Now, use the Pythagorean Theorem for each rafter:

Lower Rafter: 10² (run) + 5² (rise) = c²
100 + 25 = c²
125 = c²
c (lower rafter length) =
125 11.18 feet
Upper Rafter: 10² (run) + 3² (rise) = c²
100 + 9 = c²
109 = c²
c (upper rafter length) =
109 10.44 feet

5. Account for Overhang and Bird's Mouth

Add Overhang: Add your desired overhang (1 foot in our example) to each rafter length.

Lower rafter: 11.18 + 1 = 12.18 feet

Upper rafter: 10.44 + 1 = 11.44 feet

Subtract Bird's Mouth: The "bird's mouth" is the notch cut where the rafter sits on the wall plate. Subtract the depth of this cut (typically around 1.5 inches) from your final rafter length.

Factor in local building codes which may have specific requirements for rafter sizes and spacing.

This method provides a basic framework for calculating gambrel roof rafters. Remember to prioritize accuracy and seek expert advice when needed to ensure a safe and structurally sound roof.
