How To Calculate Wall Height Difference When Framing Roof With Different Pitches For Fascia Board

The pitch of a roof is the angle of the roof relative to the horizontal. A steeper roof has a higher pitch, and a flatter roof has a lower pitch. The pitch of a roof can affect the appearance of the home, the amount of rain and snow that accumulates on the roof, and the cost of construction.

Steeper roofs are more visually appealing than flatter roofs. They also shed rain and snow more quickly, which can help to prevent damage to the roof and the home. However, steeper roofs are more expensive to build and can be more difficult to maintain.

Flatter roofs are less expensive to build and are easier to maintain. However, they are more likely to accumulate rain and snow, which can damage the roof and the home.

How to Calculate Wall Height Difference When Framing Roof With Different Pitches For Fascia Board

If you are building a home with a roof that has different pitches, you will need to calculate the difference in wall height between the two sides of the roof. This will ensure that the fascia board is level across the entire roof.

To calculate the difference in wall height, you will need to know the following:

The difference in the roof pitches (in inches)

The length of the overhang (in feet)

The depth of the seat cut (in inches)

Once you have this information, you can use the following formula to calculate the difference in wall height:

Difference in wall height = (Difference in roof pitches divided by 12) times (Length of overhang) + Depth of seat cut

For example, if the difference in the roof pitches is 2 inches, the length of the overhang is 2 feet, and the depth of the seat cut is 1 inch, then the difference in wall height would be:

(2 / 12) * 2 feet + 1 inch = 4 inches

This means that the wall on the side with the steeper roof needs to be raised by 4 inches in order for the fascia board to line up with the roof rafters.

You won't need to add seat cut depth if both of the different pitched rafters have the same seat cuts. If not, then you will need to take the difference and add or subtract it from one side of the wall height or the other.

Tips for Framing a Roof with Different Pitches

Be sure to measure the roof pitches carefully.

Use a level to ensure that the walls are level.

Be sure to cut the rafters to the correct length.

Roof framing is an important part of home building. When building a home with a roof that has different pitches, it is important to calculate the difference in wall height to ensure that the fascia board is level.
