How To Extend or Add Fascia And Overhang To Existing Home With Gable Roof - Home Remodeling Part 7
This video by Greg demonstrates how to add a roof overhang to an existing home that originally lacked one. This common construction practice was often used to save costs in older homes. While specific instructions may vary depending on the house, we provide general guidance and tips for this project, yours may be different.
The first step involves removing sections of sheathing to access the roof rafters. Next, create framing supports using 2x4s spaced 32 inches apart. Consider the rafter length and cantilevered limitations when planning the overhang. Install these supports using 16d nails, adjusting the installation method based on sheathing presence.
To ensure a straight fascia board, install the framing supports slightly longer and cut them to the exact length later. Determine the desired fascia board length and mark the support blocks accordingly. Use a chalk line to create straight cuts.
Install the fascia board using screws initially for easier adjustments. Determine the plumb cut for the fascia board using a straight edge and level. Transfer this measurement to the other side of the roof for consistency. Secure the fascia board with nails, angling them for better hold.
Bonus Tips:
Double-check measurements to avoid errors.
Use high-quality materials and fasteners.
Consider hiring a professional for complex roof structures.
Obtain necessary permits and comply with building codes.
Take your time and pay attention to detail.
