Dealing with Joist Shrinkage - Sistering with Shorter Lumber

Let's say your floor joists were originally 9 1/2 inches deep, but they've shrunk down to 9 1/4 inches. Trying to force a full-length 9 1/2 inch joist into that space will be nearly impossible and could even cause further damage.
The Solution: Shorter Joists and Wedges
Measure and Cut: Measure the existing joist's depth at several points along its length to determine the extent of shrinkage. Cut your new "sister" joist about 1/4 to 1/2 inch shorter than the shortest measurement of the existing joist. This allows for some clearance during installation.

Wedge and Secure: Insert small wooden wedges or blocks between the new joist and the existing one. Gradually tap the wedges in until the new joist is tightly pressed against the existing joist and any sag is eliminated. This lifts the new joist into the correct position.
Fasten: Once the new joist is snug and level, securely fasten it to the existing joist using construction adhesive and screws or nails. Use a pattern recommended for sistering joists, ensuring adequate penetration into both pieces of lumber.
