I recently had to fix a sagging roof overhang on my shed. The overhang was made of 2x4 trusses, and it was starting to sag under the weight of the roof. I knew that this was a problem, and I knew that I needed to fix it before it got worse.
I started by removing the blocks that were between the sagging rafters. I then cut off the overhang. I left the rafters in place, but they will not look as good.
I then installed new rafters next to the trusses. The rafters were nailed right next to the roof trusses. They were also long enough to extend past the overhang.
The rafters needed to be notched to fit where they sat on top of the wall. They also needed to be notched to fit around the trusses.
The rafters were then raised up into the attic. This was a difficult task because I have a low-pitched roof. I had to remove the roofing and sheathing in order to raise the rafters.
The rafters were then nailed to the trusses. I used at least six nails. The nails were staggered.
New blocks were then installed between the rafters. The blocks were different sizes than the old blocks.
The fascia board needed to be removed. It had a warp in it that needed to be corrected.
The project was completed by installing new fascia board. The fascia board was long enough to extend past the overhang.
I was able to complete this project in about two hours. It was a lot of work, but it was worth it to fix the sagging roof overhang.
Here are some bonus tips:
Use 2x6 trusses for the rafters and fascia board if you have a tile roof or a large overhang.
The rafters can be left in place if you want, but they will not look as good.
The rafters may need to be notched to fit around the trusses.
