How to Cut Cast Iron Pipes

Cutting cast iron pipes can be tricky due to their thickness and brittle nature. Here's a list of methods and tools that can be used:

1. Snap Cutter

How it works: This tool uses a chain with sharp wheels that tighten around the pipe and score it until it snaps.

Pros: Relatively quick and easy to use, especially in tight spaces.

Cons: Can sometimes leave a jagged edge.

2. Reciprocating Saw

How it works: Uses a back-and-forth blade motion to cut through the pipe.

Pros: Versatile and can be used for a variety of cuts.

Cons: Can be messy and create vibrations, requires a special blade for cast iron (diamond or carbide-grit).

3. Angle Grinder with Cut-Off Wheel

How it works: A spinning abrasive disc cuts through the pipe.

Pros: Powerful and fast.

Cons: Can create a lot of dust and sparks, requires careful handling and eye protection.

4. Chain Cutter

How it works: Uses a chain with cutting wheels that is wrapped around the pipe and tightened with a ratchet.

Pros: Provides a clean, straight cut.

Cons: Can be more time-consuming than other methods.

Important Notes

Safety First: Wear safety glasses, gloves, and a dust mask when cutting cast iron.

Clean Cuts: Ensure the cutting line is clearly marked and the tool is positioned correctly to avoid jagged edges.

Deburring: After cutting, use a file or deburring tool to smooth the edges of the pipe.

If you're unsure about any of these methods or lack experience with plumbing, it's always best to consult a professional plumber.
