How To Use Beam Above Floor To Provide Structural Support For Stringers With Pipe Under Stairway

I recently ran into a problem where I needed to run a pipe through the structural framing of my stairs, but I didn't have enough headroom to do so. I knew that I couldn't just notch the stringers, because that would weaken the structural integrity of the stairs. So, I started brainstorming some alternative solutions.

I came up with the idea of using a beam above the floor to provide structural support for the stringers. This would allow me to run the pipe through the floor framing, without having to worry about compromising the structural integrity of the stairs.

Here's how I did it:

I first installed a structural beam above the floor, between the two framing members that support the stringers.

I then ripped down the stringers and set them on top of the beam.

I installed hangers to support the stringers from the beam.

I then installed a board between the stringers and the floor framing, to create the first step.

I finally installed the treads and risers on the steps.
